1:1 coaching · Matthew Harwood · Eng manager at Uber

Spend 35 minutes. Save a year of searching.

You live between design and code, and that is a rare skill. A lot of teams still don’t know how to hire for it, so you have to explain it for them. Show the prototype. Show the feature that only shipped because you could do both. Make it easy for someone to say yes to you.

Here is how it works. You pick a Friday, pay $100, and send me your resume with a short Icebreakers doc. I read both before we talk. I lead engineering teams at Uber and I hire people, so I know what makes a hiring manager say yes. In 35 minutes, I will tell you exactly what I see. We will shape your story so teams see where you fit. You will leave with a clear plan instead of another year of guessing.

Who is coming? One person books and pays the $100 — there is no split payment. Forward the Google Meet invite from your confirmation email to whoever you want in the room, and settle up between yourselves. Everyone joining should send me their own resume and Icebreakers doc, so I have read all of them before the 35 minutes start.

  • From a scattered set of interests to a clear direction.

I had the opportunity to work with Matt at a time when I had a lot of ambition, but very little clarity on where I wanted to take my career. As my manager, he gave me the freedom to explore my interests, trusted me with opportunities well beyond what I expected, and helped me turn a pretty scattered set of interests into a much clearer sense of direction.

What I respect most about Matt is the conviction he brings to the way he leads. He has a strong sense for where things are going, the confidence to act on it before it’s obvious, and an eye for recognizing potential in people early. His perspective has stuck with me well beyond the time we worked together, and has shaped a lot of how I think about my own career.

  • From a resume review to owning parts of the product.

I met Matthew through his Discord community while I was still in college, looking for feedback on my projects and how to present my work. He reviewed my resume and portfolio, then helped me turn my experience into case studies that explained what I’d actually built. He also brought me onto my first contract, where I went on to own substantial parts of the product and help onboard new engineers. Working with Matt taught me to think from first principles, question design decisions, and understand how UX and performance affect the people using what we build. Those lessons made a real difference early in my career, and I still draw on them when making product decisions.
